Winter is here, and with it comes the need to keep warm and cozy.
At The Cabin Group, we understand the importance of maintaining a comfortable environment without breaking the bank on energy costs. Here are some top tips to help you save electricity and keep your portable cabin energy-efficient this winter.
1. Insulate Your Cabin Properly
Having a well-insulated building is key to keeping it warm. At The Cabin Group, all our cabins are fully insulated. Walls, roof and underfloor insulation has been added to increase your comfort! To take it one step further we have built our cabins with doubled glazed windows and doors which has been shown to improve the rooms insulation ability by 73%!
2. Use Energy-Efficient Heaters
Choosing an energy efficient heater should be your number one priority when heating your portable cabin. The General way to calculate how many watts you may need for heating a room is taking the room size in square meters (11.52m2 for our large cabin) and multiplying this by 70watts. (11.52m2 x 70 = 806watts)
Modern electric heaters, such as ceramic or infrared models, provide efficient heating while consuming less power. Set the heater to a moderate temperature and use a programmable thermostat to control when the heater runs, ensuring it operates only when necessary. To pre-heat our cabins effectively, heaters generally only need to be turned on for 5-10 minutes before you enter.
Many heaters now days include a smart thermometer, often connected to an app that allows you to set certain times of the day to heat the room, while turning off when you’re no longer around.
3. Maximize Natural Light and Warmth
Take advantage of natural light and warmth during the day by opening curtains and blinds. Sunlight not only illuminates your cabin but also provides natural warmth. In the evening, close the curtains just before the sun goes down to retain the heat accumulated during the day. The Cabin Group uses thermal curtains in all our cabins to retain the heat more effectively.
4. Utilize LED Lighting
Switching to LED lighting in your portable cabin consume significantly less electricity compared to traditional incandescent bulbs and have a longer lifespan. Switching to LED lighting is a very easy way to reduce you power usage, and can be done in a matter of minutes. With normal usage LED lights will pay themselves off within a year, and their long lifespan ensures they will not need replacing for many more to come.
5. Unplug Unused Electronics
Many electronics and appliances continue to draw power even when they're turned off. To prevent this "phantom" energy use, unplug devices that are not in use. Consider using power strips with an on/off switch to easily disconnect multiple devices at once.
6. Use Energy-Efficient Appliances
If your portable cabin includes appliances like a mini-fridge or microwave, ensure they are energy-efficient models. Look for appliances with high energy star ratings, which indicate lower energy consumption. Using these appliances wisely can contribute to overall energy savings.
7. Dress Warmly and Use Blankets
Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective. Wearing warm clothing and using blankets can help you stay comfortable without relying heavily on your heater. Layering up allows you to keep the thermostat at a lower setting, saving electricity. Electric Blankets are also a great way to stay warm in bed, using far less energy than a space heater. But be sure to turn them off before you go to sleep to stay safe!
8. Maintain Your Heating System
Regular maintenance of your heating system ensures it operates efficiently. Clean or replace filters as needed, and have the system inspected annually by a professional. A well-maintained heater runs more efficiently and uses less electricity.
9. Opt for a Rug or Carpet
Adding a rug or carpet to your cabin's floor can provide an extra layer of insulation. It helps retain heat and keeps your feet warm, reducing the need to increase the heater's temperature. Additionally, it adds a cozy feel. Some of our portable cabins come with a carpet floor which is great for winter, while we also offer a more durable vinyl plank flooring as well.
Conclusion
Staying warm and saving electricity in your portable cabin this winter is achievable with a few smart strategies. By insulating properly, using energy-efficient devices, and maximizing natural warmth, you can create a comfortable environment without high energy bills. At The Cabin Group, we prioritize energy efficiency and comfort, ensuring our cabins provide the best possible experience year-round.
